About this generator

A spring in exactly the size you need, for a toy, a latch, a button or a fix.

How to use

  1. Set the diameter and length.
  2. Choose the number of coils and the wire size: fewer coils and a taller wire make a stiffer spring.
  3. Print it standing up, as shown.

Printing tips

  • No supports. Print slowly, with plenty of cooling.
  • PETG gives a springy, durable spring. PLA works at first but goes soft and can crack. TPU gives a soft spring that never breaks.
  • A wire width of at least 4 nozzle lines (1.6 mm with a 0.4 nozzle) prints cleanest.
  • Do not compress a printed spring fully: half its travel is a safe limit.

Frequently asked questions

How stiff will it be?

That depends on the plastic, so try one. Make the wire taller or use fewer coils for a stiffer spring, the opposite for a softer one.

Why a flat wire and not a round one?

A flat wire prints standing up without supports and is stiffer for the same amount of plastic.
