About this generator

Measure the bottle, choose a three-digit number and give the bottle in a case that only opens when the number is found. Inside each ring a gate sits under its digit: only when all three show at the front do the gates line up and the hood lifts off. It's a gift puzzle, not a security lock.

How to use

  1. Measure the widest part of the bottle and its height, and enter both.
  2. Choose the three digits (top ring first) and a label for the hood.
  3. Print the base standing up, the hood upside down and the three rings flat. For the default bottle the layout is about 260 × 260 mm, bigger than many beds: in your slicer split the Rings part into its three rings and spread the pieces over two plates.
  4. Slide the rings onto the collar (the ring with one dot on top, the one with three dots at the bottom), turn each to its digit above the pointer, put the bottle in, slide the hood down with its lugs in the slot, and turn the rings away from the number.

Printing tips

  • Print the rings in a contrasting color: the digits are engraved.
  • If the hood doesn't slide in with the right number, raise Fit clearance.

Frequently asked questions

Is it secure?

No. It keeps the bottle in for the fun of the puzzle; it is not a lock against theft, and the number can be found by trying.

Where is the number stored?

Only in the shape of the rings: the gate inside each ring is under its digit. Anyone who sees the inside of the rings can work it out, so give the printed rings, not the file.

Which bottles fit?

Any bottle up to the diameter and height you enter; the case has 1 mm of room round the bottle and 3 mm above it.
