Printing in more than one color

How multi-color models are built here, and how to print them with or without an AMS or MMU.

How the parts are split

Many generators build the model from separate colored parts, such as a base and raised letters. In the 3D preview each part has its own color, and in the 3MF download each part is its own object with a filament slot.

You can change the colors on the tool page. Parts with the same color share one filament slot.

With a multi-material unit (AMS, MMU, toolchanger)

  • Download the 3MF and open it in your slicer. Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer pick up the filament slots automatically.
  • Check that each part is on the filament you want. Change it in the slicer if needed.
  • Slice and print. A purge tower or flushing into infill is normal and keeps the colors clean.

With a single nozzle and no AMS: color swap by layer

Designs where the second color sits on top (raised text, a logo on a plate) can be printed with one nozzle by pausing at the right height and swapping filament.

  • Download the STL, or the 3MF if you want to see the parts.
  • In the slicer, use the layer slider to find the first layer of the top color.
  • Add a filament change (M600) or pause at that layer.
  • When the printer pauses, load the second color and continue.

Tips

  • High contrast reads best: white on black, black on yellow, white on blue.
  • Raised text of 0.8 to 1.2 mm is enough for a clear color change. Thicker only costs time.
  • For text flush with the surface, choose an engraved or inlaid option where the tool offers one. That needs a multi-material printer.
