About this generator

Children post their letters through the slot in the lid; at night the lid opens on its hinge and the letters come out. Box and lid print in one go, already joined by the hinge, and a clasp keeps the lid shut.

How to use

  1. Pick a preset or set the inside size and the slot. The slot must be a few millimetres shorter than the box is wide.
  2. Type a name and a second line, and choose a symbol for the front.
  3. Print as exported: box and lid open side up, joined by the hinge. The 3MF has the lettering as a separate color.
  4. Flex the hinge gently to free it, then fold the lid over until the clasp clicks.

Printing tips

  • Don't put a brim across the hinge.
  • Switch Show to Closed to see the lid folded shut before you print.

Frequently asked questions

Which envelopes fit?

The C6 preset makes a 166 mm slot in a box 170 mm wide inside, for C6 envelopes (114 × 162 mm) put in long side first. The default box takes postcards and folded letters up to 118 mm.

The hinge is stuck after printing.

Bend the lid gently back and forth to free it. If it stays stuck, raise Hinge clearance by 0.05–0.1 mm for the next print.
