Etsy vs eBay vs Amazon Handmade fees

For the same sale, Etsy, eBay and Amazon Handmade each take a different share. On a USD 30 order in the US, Etsy takes 11%, eBay 15% and Amazon Handmade 15%. Enter one of your items below to see the fees and what you keep at each, sorted from best to worst.

The item

From the print cost calculator.

0 if you don't charge it.

How to use it

  1. Enter the price, the shipping the buyer pays and your costs for one item.
  2. Pick your currency: the table shows the marketplaces whose fees are in that currency, plus your own shop.
  3. Read which place leaves you the most. Open the fee calculator of a marketplace for its options, like Offsite Ads or eBay categories.

The formula

For each marketplace: fees = its standard fee lines for this sale

You keep = buyer pays − tax − fees − your costs

Rows are sorted by what you keep

Each row uses the standard rates without ads or extras. eBay rows in the UK and Germany use the first category; the row says which.

Your own shop only pays a card payment fee here. Add your shop subscription and advertising to your costs to compare fairly.

Worked example

A $25.00 name sign with $5.00 shipping paid by the buyer. It costs $4.00 to make, $0.50 to pack and $4.50 to ship. Compared in US dollars.

Your own shop$19.83 kept
Etsy (US)$17.70 kept
eBay (US)$16.52 kept
Amazon Handmade (US)$16.50 kept

Of the marketplaces, Etsy (US) leaves the most here ($17.70) and Amazon Handmade (US) the least ($16.50).

Fees are only part of the choice

  • Where buyers search for what you make matters more than a few percent in fees. Personalised gifts and decor often sell best on Etsy; parts and replacements on eBay.
  • Each marketplace has its own rules for 3D printed and handmade items. Etsy's "Made by seller" rule and Amazon Handmade's application both ask what you made yourself: check them before you list.

Questions

Is Etsy or eBay cheaper to sell on?

In the US, Etsy usually takes a little less from an average sale: 11% of a USD 30 order against eBay's 15%, and more once the buyer pays sales tax, because eBay takes its fee of the tax too. On very cheap items the fixed fees decide, and Etsy's Offsite Ads can make a single sale far more expensive.

Why are some marketplaces missing from the table?

The table only shows marketplaces whose fixed fees are in the currency you picked, so the numbers stay right. Switch the currency to see the UK or EU rates.

Does the comparison include advertising?

No, standard fees only. Etsy's Offsite Ads and eBay's promoted listings come on top when you use them; the marketplace pages let you add them.

How current are these rates?

They are copied from each marketplace's own fee pages, and the date of the last check is shown under the table. Marketplaces change their fees from time to time, so check the source before big decisions.
