  • 13.6% is the rate for most categories, on the whole order including shipping and sales tax, up to USD 7,500 per item. Some categories differ.
  • The first 250 listings a month are free; after that a listing costs USD 0.35.

How to use it

  1. Choose your eBay site: the US, the UK or Germany. The fees and the currency fill in.
  2. In the UK and Germany, pick the category you list in; the rate depends on it.
  3. Enter the price, the shipping the buyer pays, and what the item costs you to make, pack and ship.
  4. For the US, enter the sales tax your buyers usually pay. eBay takes its fee of the tax too, so it changes the fee.
  5. Adjust the price until what you keep is right.

The formula

Final value fee = rate × (price + shipping + sales tax), with a lower rate above a threshold per item

Per-order fee = a fixed amount, a little higher when the order is over 10

UK only: regulatory operating fee = 0.35% × the whole order

You keep = buyer pays − tax − fees − your costs

In the US, 13.6% applies up to USD 7,500 per item and 2.35% above. In the UK and Germany the rates are per category: 10.9% to 12.9% in the UK, 11% to 14% in Germany.

The UK and German rates are for business sellers and are shown without VAT. Private sellers living in the UK or Germany pay no final value fee on sales at home.

Worked example

A $24.00 name sign with $6.00 shipping paid by the buyer. It costs $3.80 to make, $0.60 to pack and $5.20 to ship. It sells on eBay in the US, and the buyer pays 7% sales tax on top.

Buyer pays$30.00
Final value fee$4.37
Per-order fee$0.40
All eBay fees$4.77
Your costs$9.60
You keep$15.63

eBay takes $4.77, 15.9% of what the buyer pays, and you keep $15.63 of the sale.

Common mistakes

  • Taking the fee of the item price only. eBay's final value fee includes shipping and, in the US, the sales tax the buyer pays.
  • Forgetting the per-order fee on cheap items: on a USD 5 sale, USD 0.30 is 6% on its own.
  • Using the US rate for a UK or German shop, where the category decides the rate.

Questions

How much does eBay take from a sale?

In the US, 13.6% of the whole order for most categories plus USD 0.30 per order (USD 0.40 over USD 10). On a USD 30 order with 7% sales tax that is about USD 4.80. The first 250 listings a month are free to list.

Does eBay charge fees on shipping and tax?

Yes. The final value fee is a percentage of the total amount of the sale: the item price, shipping and handling, and sales tax.

Which category should I pick for 3D prints?

The one you actually list in. Home decor goes under Home, Furniture & DIY (UK) or Möbel & Wohnen (Germany); toys and figures under Toys & Games or Spielzeug; models under Modellbau. If you are not sure, take the higher rate.

Do private sellers pay eBay fees?

In the UK and Germany, private sellers selling at home pay no final value fee. Sellers who make and sell items regularly usually count as a business; check your country's rules.
